1. We were given the opportunity to furlough ourselves again for the 2012-13 school year. Our union membership voted overwhelmingly to do so, resulting in an 8 day reduction to the school year for next year and a 4% pay reduction.
2. We have been told to anticipate an additional pay reduction beyond the 4% mentioned above.
3. Should the state electorate not vote to resume a one-half cent sales tax in November of this year, the OUSD will cut 15 additional days, resulting in an additional significant pay cut somewhere in the neighborhood of 8%.
4. Add all of that together and it means lots of financial instability for OUSD teachers, not a raise in any way.

As for illegal immigrants, yes, if a kid doesn’t speak English you can count the parents are illegal by a high probability. Perhaps the kid is legal because he or she was birthed here-for no cost to the parents only to Ca taxpayers. Here is a snip from a Dec 11h 2011 OVN article “OUSD Presents Struggles, Strategies” by Mist Volaski I found in a search. The students at Mira Monte were stripped of 90 minutes, this year, to cater to ESL students two day a week. English speaking students sent home early.

Mr. Bangser, you have a tough job and have to implement some unpleasant cutbacks. However, your analogy about a family income seems odd in light of the fact you stated there is a 7% reduction in enrollment.

That is something that can be planned for. A family knows that members will be leaving, maybe leaving an empty room? Another family might move into that room if they were sharing with another. Also, their income is based on their employment, not how many are in the home. If someone loses their job, they adapt.

It just seems that when measurable trends would result in projections of reduced revenues, schools would plan accordingly and prepare in advance for those reductions. It seems they did not.

How the illegal immigrant issue was brought into this fray, the OVN admits that there was an importing conflict.

If you have a stake in your community consider two things:
- It takes a leader with clarity to put bad news out clearly. Hank earned more respect with this editorial. Things will not be better in Shangrala’s schools next year. Gotta’ be truthin’ about it.
- If you think that illegal immigrants are the cause of your personal angst or the whole cause of our current economic demise, you lack any sort of understanding of history and economic power.

Why did the good ol’ US of A enact a minimum wage? Why do we have child labor laws? Why did women (and those other “legal” minorities who chaff your Levis) fight to be recognized with unalienable rights?

History and economics tell you that those with power don’t always use it wisely. I trust that you are equally upset that large businesses outsourced jobs for years. With a liberal import policy and less manufacturing, our tax base has eroded significantly. Not to mention energy and financial corruption that has not only shortchanged the pocketbook of the common man but states too.

Do you really think that people of color caused your grief? How many execs of Enron or BofA looked Latino?

I find it quit ironic that an article about the school district is presented with more typos and mistakes that are reminiscent to the coolies we had assisting us during the Boer War!
