Ojai City Watch 5/19/09

FROM: Sgt. Joe Evans

Greetings Watchers.
Last week we had a night time residential burglary on Valley Road in Oakview. A day or two later, we had a commercial burglary in the same area. The crooks in these cases used similar techniques during their crimes. Deputies acting on a citizens tip contacted one of the crooks. The investigation continued and resulted in the arrest of two boys from the Oakview area. Both suspects are under the age of 18 so their identities will not be released. Stolen property from both burglaries have been recovered and will be returned to the owners.

This is another example of how a tip from a citizen has led to the arrest of both crooks. Detectives will now see if there are any other crimes these crooks may have been involved in.

With summer upon us I wanted to let you know that your children need to be riding their bicycles in  safe and legal manner. Senior Deputy Jim Popp has put together a list of things that may help you educate your children. Jim is a longtime member of our community and knows more about traffic than I will ever forget. Please feel free to contact Jim if you have any questions about traffic issues in our valley. He can be contacted through City Watch. I have attached Jim’s list to this alert.

We now have just under 400 people in our program who receive alerts directly from me. Many of you have contacted me with information about how many people you are forwarding our alerts to. While the numbers vary from 0 (not forwarding to anyone), all the way to forwarding to 212 people on one list. The most common number of people being forwarded to is about 20. This was only a small sample of all who are forwarding, so I do not hang my hat on the results.  I feel safe in saying that we are reaching between 4,000 and 6,000 people with each alert. This does not included all the people who get the alerts from the Ojai Valley News web site. Please increase the size of your forwarding lists. My goal is to have 500 people receiving alerts from me. Those 500 people each forward to at least 20 people each. this will result the alerts being forwarded to at least 10,000 people. Those 10,000 will forward to who knows how many people. The end result should be an entire valley working together to keep our neighborhoods safe.

You are all doing a great job and should be proud of how you have changed the way we all communicate. Your active participation sends the message to all your neighbors that we are  watching out for each other. It also sends the message to criminals that “we are watching and we can’t wait to call the police”.

Remember we are not victims until we give up. Until that time, we are neighbors who are committed to keeping our neighborhoods free from the fear of crime.

Keep up the good work and please tell your children to wear their helmets when riding their bicycles and skateboards.

At the request of many of you, I have attached the City Watch flyer. It has all the information needed for your friends and neighbors to sign up.

Your friend and neighbor, Joe

  2. Hi, um, I’d like to report a crime? Someone has been impersonating me! Well, not physically, but on this blog!..Isn’t that identity theft? I admit that I’ve been taking ‘Ambien,’ and apparently have some recollection issues that my wife blames me of, but still… Do you think officer Jim can start a ‘Jim’s List’ to help keep track of wayward blogging? It’s really disruptive to what this community is trying to achieve here. Oh!, and by the way I’ve seen a lot of men loitering in downtown Meiners Oaks, they all think it’s necessary to catch a bus, just after noon?

  3. Hey, ah, I’d like to retract a certain portion of what I just stated? I’m in downtown Ojai now, and the large number of men I saw waiting for a bus in Meiners Oaks, seemed to have now congregated by Chaparral H.S.. They must all be waiting for their children to get out of school. I left my good friend Guzman (He’s a sock puppet) on the bench in the shade, under the pepper tree, as I go to Pat’s liquor to pick some 40′s up for the boys! Hopefully a prospective employer will pass by, that’s what I’m here for. I’ll keep a strong watch for any kid without a helmet though!

  4. I have a bald spot on the back of my head. It’s not something I want to talk about, but it’s noticeable. Kind of like California’s budget. Is this what we’re born into? Or can their be an altruistic alternative?

  5. Personally, I think the bowling alley is a great idea. Who doesn’t have some sort of aggression issue that needs dealing with at the end of the day. Oh, I’m sorry, Am I on the wrong thread?

  6. Maury Gould here; Watching intently. Still no change in what I observe to be the obvious. Still, no change. In my short time away, Guzman was spat upon, and tossed aside for no reason. Am I here to blame? No. We together question what we believe in. Why? This is not an issue of immigration. I can answer this in one quip: Bread in hand, health care to follow..You’re a state employee, so do what I pay my taxes for you to do.

  7. Guzman, poor Guzman, my little friend, belittled by society’s fringe. Am I to blame? Is that why I am here? I leave for a moment, skies open, rain falls. In need of help.

  9. There you go, perfect example. Guzman is completely innocent and does Not!know how to ski. This has now become racist. Defamation of character, I’ll get the ACLU, ACORN if I have to.

  10. Let’s face it, Maury, you are on the fringe. Step right up and get line behind the other ten percenters. Maybe you should run for city council alongside LaFollette. That would be a marriage made on the moon.

John Doe offers the insights that others lack the ability to see. John Doe sees solutions where others see problems.

  11. How many officers in Ojai are reaching out to the public who care and are as approachable, as Joe Evans? Joe, 99.9 % of Ojai appreciates your efforts and hopes you continue. The other ones amount to only a couple who enjoy being disrespectful and idiotic and who pretend to be more than one person.
