Town Meeting Set For Gang Talk
UPDATE: Town Hall Meeting on Gang Violence Draws Hundreds
Grassroots group teams up with police for June 18 event
By Sondra Murphy
Ojai Valley residents who want to work proactively to eliminate gang violence are encouraged to attend a town hall meeting on June 18.
Sponsored by Heal the Community, a group of local parents and residents impacted by the April gang-related murder of Seth Scarminach, the forum will allow residents to discuss the issue of gangs in our valley with a panel of community leaders and experts.
The panel will include deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Division and Gang Unit, Ojai Valley Community Church pastor Paul Bergmann, members of the S.A.F.E. Coalition and Ojai Police Chief Capt. Chris Dunn.
Heal the Community has arranged Spanish translation simulcast into wireless head sets during the meeting. “Our main goal at Heal the Community is we want to provide a public forum for people to make statements, ask questions and get answers,” said HTC member Dusty Fernandez. She said that there will be a suggestion box that the club will use to help direct the focus of future meetings. “We will take all the information from this meeting and present it back to the community at a meeting in August. That will steer us in the direction we’ll go next.”
People will also be able to sign up for Neighborhood Watch programs, donate to HTC and get literature on many related issues and programs. “We’re not discriminating against anyone in this valley,” Fernandez said. “We want to bring all groups together in a peaceful meeting. We’re excited. We think there’s going to be a really big turnout.”
The June 18 meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the Matilija Junior High School Auditorium.
For information on becoming a part of Heal the Community or to sign up to help with the meeting setup or cleanup, call 649-1466 or 640-0995.

This state was originally a Spanish speaking province and, like it or not, many of our citizens still speak the language and it makes sense to hold meetings in two languages. Check out the dual language areas of Canada.

There is no official language in this country. There are several native languages, none of which is English. Even the invading colonists spoke a variety of languages. Small-minded bigotry has caused many problems, and never solved a single one. I hope that the prior comments are not an indication of what we can expect at the meeting.

How can they (police) make any money if they deport? They loose their jobs on top of it.
As the crime rate would actually drop.
Clearly it is not how can we get rid of said persons, its more like how can we get more and expand the problems, to make way for more laws and more law enforcement and more $$$$$$$.
Military and police are at an all-time high as far as demand goes (mainly in the DEA vs peace officer field).
War on drugs not the war on crime.
Over the last nine months the blotter activity has been unchanged how are the stats down??
Border patrol?
How do you patrol something that is non-existent?
I am no expert but the 4 guys patrolling the border are not going to stop 3or4 million people from walking over an invisible line in the dirt.
The police should kick down some cash or equipment to the B.P. that would ease up on the strain of our local law enforcement.
It appears that law enforcement gets man power, vehicles, drones, air ships w/flir,etc apparently for the pot plants and looking threw the walls of houses.
All the capability to do the job of both but for some reason just can’t or won’t get it done in the last 20yrs.

Free speech covers all spoken languages for a good reason, no voice will be silenced or ignored yours, mine or theirs.
A tax added to the proses of becoming legal for English training or electronic translators (for police and other services) would not be unreasonable.
Good jobs could be available in that market.
It is very hard to stop a large surge of water but diverting it “symbiosis” makes it a partnership.

Hey there, california hottie here. It’s great to see people blogging about such an important issue. All the hub-bub about a bi-lingual meeting is sad. could you imagine being a law abiding, honest latino in our community right now? they are just as afraid as all the rest of town. they could be targeted as gang bangers, just because of their color of skin. The Spanish simulcast will not be heard during that meeting. it say’s in the paper they will be wearing head sets so they my join in on this much needed meeting.we have a racial divide that could paralyze any community, anywhere. the point is to question authority, don’t sit at your computer and complain. do something , go to that meeting for pete’s sake. Will you be there? we will! If you aren’t a part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

United,we as a community can be the change that we all deserve. It is only when we sit back and tell others that “someone should do something!” that nothing is accomplished. Please help make a difference in the lives of yourself and everyone around you.I thought the focus of this town hall meeting was to let ALL the community be heard, not just certain members.Who has decided that they are above the next? Can we not lay down our differences to come together and help find solutions to OUR town problems? What was the reason for moving to this wonderful valley in the first place? Can you remember why? Do any children of our valley deserve to be murdered? We all know the answer is a resounding NO! Now is your chance to stand and be heard! No more excuses !!! I challenge all of the ojai valley from the summit to casitas springs to come to the june 18 town hall meeting and make a difference! We only have more of our youth to lose! Can we afford to let that happen? Again you know the answer………NO!

The problem is if anyone speaks honestly, directly re OSL or anything of that nature in this town, they will be labeled, (not in any particular order) bigots, rascists, white supremicists, republicans, conservatives etc The politically correct, lockstep agenda that is Ojai and to some extent California has resulted in the situation we now have. When people try to stand up in Ojai whether its inappropriate books not sanctioned by the ed code or whatever, they are labeled (see above) dismissed and their reps are torn apart without support from our school board or officials…. Who wants to speak up in that atmosphere? no thanks .. its easier to just fly under the radar and ignore the graffiti and gangs and drugs and murders. no wonder people just give up and become gun owners — not something I approve of but certainly something I am beginning to understand and think about doing to protect my family and property.

It seems like only yesterday (or every single one if you count ‘em) that there was a specific family name, street address, and list of affiliates that was known throughout the local community that stemmed this growing epidemic. But, since Ojai’s been a training ground for newbie cops for the last ….unspoken time, it’s no wonder this has been a minor oversight. And it’s great to know whtat the police think might help what they have no idea about. What can I do to help?

English is the official language, Spanish is not, immigrants must embrace their new culture not maintain their old one and drive around with ‘brown pride’ on their cars. Imagine if a white person drove around with ‘white pride’ on their car! Double standards? Yes! This isn’t a two way street. If an english speaker lived in a small town in Mexico would they do what English speakers are here? No. Get off the emotional rollercoasters people.

If it is the responsibility of the immigrants to assimilate and blend in, then where are the buffalo, the teepees, and the hogans? How can there even exist a group of Native Americans known a “Mission Indians”? The Spanish invaded California before the English-speaking European immigrants did. Millions of people from all over the world have come to this country for a variety of reasons, some more honorable than others. Historically, Americans have taken pride in our “melting pot” culture. Unfortunately, Americans have also selected out various immigrant groups for scapegoating every time the economy takes a hit. English is NOT the official language of the United States – there is not official language. Perhaps you Tree Lover 3 would benefit from a U.S. history course at one of our local colleges?

get real – the melting pot analogy implies that the
various ‘ingredients’ blended together become one. If our country becomes segregated into isolated communities that refuse to assimilate with one another and do not embrace a single culture and language – then we are doomed. The millions who have came to our country in past immigration cycles have assimilated into, adopted and contributed to the culture, as well as having learned the common language (which IS English). Perhaps you get real would benefit from a booster shot of common sense?

RE: get real
12 Jun 09 at 9:39 am
If that’s true, then why do we teach English as a primary language in all our schools??
You are a complacent “I will do as I am told” can’t think for yourself kool-aid drinker(too much fox news).
If the illegal immigrants assimilate so well why do they not pay this country back for the medical, schools, roads, police, court fines,DUI fines or paying into SSI like the rest of us.
Its a joke why pay your way when you can cheat, cut ahead in line and side step all our laws.
Then you expect them to respect and fallow the rest of our laws. yeah right!!!!
When you look at it this way it is free to feed,house,police,6-12+million people.(to the illegals its free)
I must make it clear it’s not the immigrants that I blame, despise or dislike, nor do I think a country wide deporting is the answer, we need to hold our elected officials accountable for the massive damage they caused by allowing this.
There is a reason, the North American Union then we will be a true melting pot you will see your savings melt away.
Go ahead and trade your children’s future so no one calls you a racist.
By the way what language are ALL the road signs on ALL the roads written in? but I’m sure it’s just coencidence.
If you can afford a new car and 20′s then you can pay taxes and/or child support.
The worst is the unseen tax on us all, inflation from the fed printing and flooding the US and chinese markets with fresh bills.
The main point I have is a majority of crime locally is not because of the language osl speaks.
so punishing members of our community who don’t fully understand English is wrong, obviously osl representatives will not be present at the meeting, but their mothers and fathers might be and may not be fully aware of what this small group has been up to.
deny no one the chance to be involved in the community they live in regardless of the language they speak.

12 Jun 09 at 2:05 pm
Anonymous 1pm. Your interpretation of melting pot is accurate, and I did not mean anything different. My understanding of the comments above about English was that some people felt that all immigrants should set aside their native culture and language, rather than adding them to the mix. Our country benefits from the experience and perspectives of such diverse groups. Learning English is not the same as giving up or barring other languages. In most countries, students are required to become bi-lingual or tri-lingual. It is a shame that we have not followed suit. Until the Bear Flag Revolt (and in many regions long afterwards), the “common” language in California (especially southern) was Spanish, not English.

12 Jun 09 at 2:12 pm
California has become a very boring place. Is it diverse? I don’t think so. Why do we just have anglo
Americans and mestizos (Mexicans)? Let’s mix it up
and have some Hungarians and Swedish. Why does the
Border Patrol only allow some and others no? Mexicans
are killing white people because there’s nobody else
to blame for their problems in North America. This will
continue until the FBI and the ICE intervene and put
an end to it. Liberal Democrats of the Ojai Valley live
in the most expensive homes and laugh at the poor who
they supposedly represent. Look at what happened in
Europe last weekend. The far right overwhelmingly
won the elections in voting for the European Parliament. North America next?

If we go live in another country we are expected to 1. learn the language of that country — learning the language of that country is not ignoring our own culture, it means as part of moving to a country we agree to be part of it and language is a huge part of being able to successfully live in that country ie TO WORK and FUNCTION successfully etc 2. obey the laws including the immigration laws of that country and to not do that by definition without any racist subtext is to face the music of the laws and punishment of that country. Its not that complicated.

First, the website i’m writing is weird. No doubt. It’s also been up for a long while, and the thoughts seemed well received at the meeting last evening.
so with the grain of proverbial salt … i feel now that you all were superb. You stepped up. you showed up. you clapped appropriately. this is a great model making opportunity. threads are converging into a confluence. read mark twain again – or for the first time, a suggestion…
weird is a word describing a quickly approaching ‘something’ off the port or starborad – a riverboat captain HAD to be aware of the weirds.
The words on this weird site then are foul: sailor talk. Read as if tipper gore were with you. keepin it real.
so i put myself on blast and this site is the result. i outed my developing career and went batty when parole screwed around with me. so i got into investigative journalism and went on a little second mission.
last night was the end of that mission. today i am unemployed and writing. on ssi with a lot of experience from talking with gang people inside. i really know what is going on and why. i’m trusted because i’m what i claim i am. it’s a unique combination – meaning i can’t earn much and need only a little to begin immediately. financially speaking of course.
where to go from here then? forward.
we all did great – in our respective roles we are all stakeholders. so if we see ourselves as such we ought work together for the sake of the company.
which by the way, some i work with – are larger in employee base than all of us in ojai and pepper pike combined. its not a toot. its a fact. 16K+
i’m willing to back up what is said last night. i’m already aligning in that direction. however – community rescue is not what i will do here. engineering is re-adjustment – think road, water, anything with flow. so we have a problem with communication flow and mostly REAL FLOW. straight talk. not bullshit talk.
Apollo 13 got home because of REAL STRAIGHT COMMUNICATION. we are on spaceship earth. ojai is poised to model to the world community wellness engineering for reals. person by person. neighbor by neighbor – street by street. yes, you bet, i am an agitator. and this is fun. crazy making and rewarding so it must be love and it must be solid ..” and it’s got to be straight from the fight …” jennifer beals?
see you around and about – stop me, question me, i’ll not be standoffish unless i’ve got a meeting and i’ll let you know if i can’t stop then. please, if you see me sitting and you have a thought a comment -whatever – let’s chat. it’s your home holmes. where do you want to go with it today?
i said you have got to stop it! stop being hypocritical. what i didn’t say and will now write is that my partner sara, who was unable to attend – she stated those simple words to me in txt. in a dialog not specifically about this topic -though sara and i always talk on multiple levels.
so. that’s the edict from who i see as the queen of the 805.
i support her. completely and legally will do everything i can to support her daughter – i can only offer adoption publically everyday.
i don’t want her influenced by parents leaving the ‘stuff’ around and then the kids jacking the parents for the hypocrisy. stop it! indeed.
thanks. more on http://www.simplesmj.com

Nice try Evan- blame your 2 yr old for your early dismissal. I had to leave early because in my crammed little section someone broke wind, and I’m allergic to nauseous stench. You want constructive open dialogue without anyone stepping on your politically correct ballet slippers then go ahead and tippytoe with the mealy mouths over in the corner. I give my free and unabashed opinion whether I’m on this blog, or sipping a latte at the fountain in the park or doing the downward dog at the yogaversity. I’ve addressed this particular issue many times in my personal life, and I didn’t need a town hall meeting to enlighten me(or my neighbors) of anything I wasn’t already aware of, or to convince me any of this will have a societal effect.

Scott who is high- How’s this for WEIRD.. your ship is listing, and your rocket has left our orbit. Ground Control to where’s my bong? the queen bee has landed
and it’s not in the 805. Here’s a new mission: Take a shower and hop the next empty trolley, then transfer on a bus(look for the one with all the illegal aliens heading back to Oxnard) then get off first stop near the ocean. There’s a place called Hobo Jungle it’s where the river meets the sea, shrouded in the bamboo. Here you will find a respit and others of like mind, if you’re lucky maybe Huck Finn

Maury,
Right on point! You should go read his stupid little blog at Ojai Post. What an idiot!
Ojai Scott,
You host a writing workshop!?! I think I could learn more from students in e.s.l. class. Give yourself a break and let go of your false sense of writing ability.
Lisa,
No thanks. You’re not my type.
To All,
Thank you for your support. I’m glad my ideas last night were met with such optisism. Anon.5: A Future You Can Bank On. I would also note that, given my popular ideas last night, I will be running for city council.

What happened at the meeting? I did not make it and was hoping for a report on the content. Would anyone be willing to check in or is this just a site for angry name callers and the mentally ill?

Anonymous 8:13, there’s content of the substance you’re after on the meeting’s thread on the Ojai Post.
According to this crowd it’s a stupid fairy site full of wusses and idiots, but we’re talking about the meeting and the issues, and so far there’s no name-calling. check it out.

Anonymous,
You don’t believe me? There was an informative bulletin, table, and people sitting and dedication.
Evan,
Who are you trying to kid? There’s absolutely nothing on your site, just a long-winded comment by you that apparently killed the thread.

I came to this thread because I was interested in reading about the town meeting at M.J.H.S. Instead of finding information or any sense of resolution, I discovered a trash bin of 85 pointless, offensive, meaningless rantings of what appear to be a bunch of nut cases venting their tired old agendas and poisoned spleens at each other. If this open forum is a representative of the brain trust of Ojai, I am so sorry.

Kittifer, I share your frustration, but know that it’s really just one person who has been allowed to hijack this thread. Getting back to the point, though, the meeting was a decent first step and there will be another one soon.

Pitiffer,
I share your frustration. In fact, I have constantly offered solutions where others see problems, only to be constantly belittled and ridiculed. It is about time somebody stated what to me has always been the obvious: Offer solutions, not namecalling.
I will say, though, that I do represent the genius elite of this town, hence, one could call me a brain trust. Did you know that I was the youngest member ever selected for MENSA? I don’t like to brag, but I am pretty smart. This is obvious, and my writings reflect what my supporters already believe: Anon.5, you are a genius, and I am glad to serve you.
Evan, cat got your tongue? By the way, your website, and especially your blogs, are absolute jokes. Get a life, you idiot!
Thank you all for your continued support, especially my latest enrollees, Kittifer and LS.

james/anon5/john hatch was the guy in the very back shouting, “deport I have solutions to problems deport,”
“I am so smart I can solve it,”
“Why are you dragging me out?,”
“You officer are an idiot,”
“I love the word idiot”
You get the idea, james shut your hatch!
As far as osl is concerned, if you are not good we will have another meeting about you.
I bet osl is sooo tickled to have the whole towns attention,
name(s) in the paper and what any gang should have, a reputation. good job.

I’m sorry, Anon.5, my husband gets a little out of control sometimes. I left him for ten minutes while I ran to the store to get him preparation h, and here he was, spewing this filth out on the internet.
To the OVN readers, I apologize.

does anyone know if there’s a centralized way to contact Heal the Community, or have contact info for any of the specific conveners?
evan austin
24 Jun 09 at 10:26 pm
No, there isn’t because they aren’t really an organization. They’re just a bunch of confused and angry people. Why do you want to contact ‘them’ anyway? To interview on your anti-OVN blog? Get real smevan smaustin.

Even…here’s the contact info that you requested 649-1466 or 640-0995. I too was trying to obtain maybe an email or website address but no luck yet. At the meeting I remember hearing Dusty say that they had only been “Heal the Community” for about 8 weeks. So maybe no one was able to start a website yet. Good luck and if you find something please pass it alone.
As for everyone else…I feel that this town is a fabulous place. We need to come together and make it the type of place where parents feel safe about letting their children ride their bikes down the street to Vons or to the Library or even to the Jolly Cone. All the silly banter on here is useless and not helping the situation. We need to find a solution not contribute to the childish games that these so called “gang members” feel that they possess. As it sounds…since there were hundreds at the meeting, there are many of us that love this town. We want to see these punks gone and want a safe place for our children and grand children…correct? Well may I ask rather then all the name calling and bickering…can we come up with a way to in a sense shut these punks down? I mean, really…the biker gangs are fine…they are, as they said at the meeting “part of the community” and “not hiding” so they’re cool but these other Ojai gangs…com’n…I say gather them all up and drop them in the middle of Colonia and see how long they last. There must be a way to keep this place the safe Ojai that it once was so my children can ride their bikes to Gramma and Grampa’s house without me worrying that some illegal will whistle to them or try to grab them or even have some gang member have some “fight” in front of them and one of them get stabbed. This is crazy!

There were hundreds of racsists at the meeting an their secretly racist hippy friends like the peace coalition. It’s just like the patriot act, sounds good but is the opposite. And this stupid heal the community effort is an outlandish effort that will do nothing. They’ve been around for months and done nothing because there is nothing for them to do, we have police. Maybe these racists will hand out red shirts to show their ‘solidarity’.

Im am an overwieght person and I am upset that you find it prudent to make fun of Little Big Bob with slurs having to do with weight at possible health conditions that he may have. Get a life sir-I doubt you’d say the same thing with regard to sexual orientation or race. Or would you?
Either way you’re wrong.
