Ojai City Watch 1/28/10

with 5 comments

Good Afternoon Watchers
In our last CityWatch Alert, I passed on how helpful it was for us to record at least the make, model and serial number of our expensive ranch equipment.  Let’s expand that thought to all property that a crook might want to take off your hands and add these two steps:

Operation I.D.
1.  Mark your valuables with your driver’s license number preceded by the letters “CA.” Burglars don’t want marked merchandise because it is difficult to fence and evidence of guilt if they are caught.
2.  Photograph those items, especially the items that cannot be engraved (jewelry, silverware, antiques….).

Take Care,
Randy

  1. Put you’re licences number on all you’re stuff, why so they can steal you’re identity also?
Why not make up a pin IE: C3F14DXTY7 engraved with no attachment to you’re personal information other than a second record stating a basic description of the things associated with that number.
If you don’t want them(thieves) to have you’re tv, stereo, etc why give them you’re drivers licence number???
    Burglars don’t want marked stuff??
Really is that why virtually all property stolen is infact marked from the manufacture via m#s#??
A receipt with model# serial# will do the same thing, unless of course the thieves file down the markings on the property.
Photos are a great idea, however I can take a picture of anything and the picture alone is not enough to prove ownership.
What I do with my valuables (jewelry and small items excluded) is hide a document inside the device with above mentioned pin hidden.
The pin is completely useless to the thief but will prove I own the property in question.

  5. You need to bait them next time. Put a valuable on your seat in your driveway so they are definetly tresspassing stay awake all night and call the police when you see them come onto your property. I knew someone who got tired of the theft and watched all night and sure enough they showed up , when they climbed into the back of his camper he called the police and kept them in the back of his camper until they arrived.
