Water Line Ruptures On Ojai Avenue

A water main broke late Wednesday morning on East Ojai Avene in front of Hakane Sushi, in plain view of the Golden State Water Company’s Ojai office. Hakane Sushi employees noticed the break around 11:15 a.m. and called the fire department, which, along with members of the Ojai Police Department, brought out cones and caution tape to direct traffic around the break. Soon after arriving, Fire Station 21 moved its engine down the road, saying they were worried about the possibility of a sink hole.

A source said that they had noticed a small leak a week before, and that the owners of Hakane Sushi and its building were notified. However, the source was unsure if Golden State Water Company was notified, and Golden State Superintendent Lance Contreras said he had received no reports. “And we drive by there every day,” so there was a good chance that he would have seen it.”

Contreras said Golden State Water crews were able to shut off the water to this “routine break” quickly, within 15 minutes, although witnesses said water appeared to continue rushing out for about 20 minutes longer. Repairs were slated for completion before the end of the business day, and a few E. Ojai Ave. businesses from Bryant Street to Shady Lane had no water until the repairs were complete. Businesses on Bryant Circle reported brown water coming from the tap, but Contreras said this not dangerous to drink, and is merely an aesthetic issue. “This is not a health issue,” he said. “There is silt at the bottom of the mains, and when we have a break like this, the water velocity increases, and the particles get stirred up.”

  1. I’m sorry, David, I can’t go along with the implication of your “Their need to kill fish is so strong that they demand that no restriction of all kinds be placed on this kind of need. ” If that has been indeed their need, plus it was allied to good sense, the need would be associated with support for marine supplies. These reserves, scientifically determined, might enable continuity in the species and therefore enjoyment, by O’Farrell supporters, in the killing; that, apart from provision of quality protein to the human diet. 2. You know it is right in line with Golden State wanting more money for upgrading the water system. The timing of this leak is very interesting. Nothing to see here move along.

  3. Thank you Anonymous, it is good to know that it isn’t just me that sees my true greatness, it is the good people of Ojai, that appreciate my genius in its pure form. Thank you I am truly honored. I’m a member of MENSA you know?

  4. Cruddy brown water can ruin your whole day. If you are doing laundry (a white load) and it runs with dirty water your clothes will all turn out with a brownish hue. If you are SHOWERING and the same thing happens you get that sludge in the little nooks and crannys, even under your nose and if you take a white towel and dry yourself off you will notice your towel is covered in dirt. Think how your scalp looks!

Not too wonderful for your toilet either as the junk settles in your tank.

So do you get a discount that day? Nope. Didn’t think so.

  5. You’re absolutely correct: Water breaks only happen in L.A. Unfortunately, with all the L.A. jerks moving up here, they’ve brought their problems with them.

  6. used to work for GWD. when ever you get a break and stir up water in the line you get brown water. let the water run for 5min (less than a dollar for the whole 5mins). and it should clear the line

  7. Nothin wrong with drinking brown silt water eh? ok. can i at least get a discount on my water bill? no? didn’t think so.
