Parolee Arrested After Robbery

Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies on the ground and in the air responded to a call of an armed robbery at Baskin Robins ice cream store in Mira Monte Thursday at around 10:30 a.m. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken after the suspect reportedly handed the clerk a note. Arrested at 3:15 p.m. on Fairview Road by Sheriff’s Department Gang Unit officers was 30-year-old parolee Tomas Sambolin, of Oak View. Above, Ojai Chief of Police Chris Dunn gathers information while Sgt. Steve Capuano cordons off the store’s entrance with yellow caution tape. After being questioned at the Ojai Police Station, Sambolin was booked at the Ventura County Main jail on suspicion of robbery and kidnapping.
Editor’s Note: Many of the comments posted on this blog allege that Tomas David. Sambolin is an illegal alien. The suspect is a convicted felon and a parolee. It is safe to assume that as an illegal alien, he would not have been granted parole after his convictions in 1998 for vandalism and grand theft by embezzlement, for which he was sentenced to a year in County Jail, and his 1999 conviction for carjacking. These off-topic comments are irrelevant to the arrest made and charges to be filed in this case.
Send him back to jail and then initiate deportation.

It matters about early release because of the uptick in crimes that will be committed. It will help prove the folly of early release and maybe somehow stop it from continuing. Crikey, one of the first things that LE does when crimes like this happen, or car burglaries, etc., is the police look to see who just got out of jail, i.e., the usual suspects.
The likeliehood of him being an illegal is about zero. He is a parolee. Had he been an illegal, he would have a deportee.
Ojai Mom If what you say is true, you can always call the police and complain of sexual harassment regarding the obscene comments. As far as men looking at you, it’s a guy thing. One of the things I enjoy about the tennis tournament is the cute women players in their outfits. Summer is a good time of year for eye candy, too.

I am a mom, a veteran of the Air Force, a former substitute teacher and a current employee of a university and I am ashamed to live in a community where my neighbors think it is acceptable to assume, based upon a person’s name, both his heritage and his immigration status. In addition to this small mindedness, the fact that “Ojai Mom” believes every male who “stares and makes obscene comments” must be an “illegal” is simply ridiculous. I would go so far as to ask this mom just where and how she is walking and what she might be wearing on these walks. Everyone should look first at themselves before passing judgment on others.

Go the the corner of El Roblar and Lomita at 6pm each day in the summer, and look around at all four corners. 100+ illegals, sitting out in the open drinking beer. Can you not make an educated guess by the appearance of these 30 year old dark-skinned Budweiser drinkers who don’t speak more than 10 words of English what their legal status is?

I have lived in Ojai for over 20 years and it is no longer possible for either myself or my teenage daughter to walk around without being aggressively harassed by hispanics (illegal or not.) Fortunately, my husband is in law enforcement and I am MORE than capable of resisting attack. We need a bigger police presence in Ojai. If that fails to materialize, those of us with financial means will CONTINUE TO LEAVE. I am a reporter for a major Southern California publication and we are currently planning on publishing a feature article on the hazards of being a caucasian woman in Ojai due to the relentless verbal abuse from the local hispanic population. When we leave, so does the money.

Re Hispanic harassment of women in public this is the heritage of the bottom stratum of society in Mejico. It’s who they are, it’s what they do there-it’s not like we get doctors and accountants sneaking in.

I’m a mom too and I talk to the men standing on the corners. A good opportunity to practice Spanish. And my daughters and I have never been disrespected. A pleasant “good morning” is usually met with respect. And a disrespectful approach probably has the opposite effect. Face it, they are not leaving.

Ojai Mom Supporter: My family has been in Ojai for 40 years. I don’t know where you and your daughter walk, or how you treat other people, but I do know that nobody in my family, which includes two teenaged daughters, has EVER been treated with disrespect by the day laborers in town. We are white (English, Irish, Danish, Native American, German, Scottish, Welsh, and Croatian blended together). You sound as though you believe yourself to be better than others, simply because you have money. I suppose, in that case, it is a good thing you have the money, as you seem to be lacking in other areas. I do not think you will be missed here, but wish you the best in your new surroundings. I hope you won’t be treated badly, simply because you are a newcomer!

I am half Mexican and yes i agree with what most of you are saying. The men that stand around downtown Ojai are very rude and disrespectful. Theres one man in particular that seems to always be drunk. I passed by him once and he made loud moaning noises when i walked by. I wont even bother calling the police anymore because nothing is ever done. These people honestly need to be deported!

I dare anyone to walk or drive through M.O. on El Roblar and not see at least 25-50 illegals at the “4 corner” intersection right in the middle of M.O. By the way: Arizona’s SB 1070, contrary to to the illegal lovers is NOT an illegal or unconstitutional law. Any state may enact any law that equals US Federal Law. So…where is protecting your own state from illegals, illegal?
The damage done by illegals from murder on down is so rampant it would take pages to name them all. Let’s hope that when the new Gov. of Cal is voted in, it’s not Whitman. I too have lived in Ojai for over 30 yrs,have a 17 yr old daughter, and have never been “aggressively” harassed or had any problem with “hispanics”. I too wonder where all this “trouble” is happeneing. Do we really need to focus on this stuff?
